7th Annual Film Festival

Animal Fables

Around the beginning of the common era, Indian Buddhists began to collect fables, or jataka tales, illuminating various human virtues and foibles—from kindness, cooperation, loyalty and self-discipline on the one hand to greed, pride, foolishness, and treachery on the other. Instead of populating these stories with people, they cast the animals of their immediate environment in the leading roles—which may have given the tales a universal appeal that helped them travel around the world, surfacing in the Middle East as Aesop’s fables and in various other guises throughout East and Southeast Asia, Africa, Russia, and Europe.

The Buddhist Education Committee presents a selection of movies that center around animals and are in effect modern animal fables. We’ll discuss the intriguing possibilities of Buddhist themes emerging in these stories after each screening.

The movies are:

Movie Date
White Dog   March 23
Au Hasard Bathasar   March 30
The Birds   April 13
The Adventures of Milo and Otis   April 20

Screenings, along with a discussion, will begin 7:00pm at VHBT.

Admission: $5 per film, or $15 for a four-film pass (available at the screenings)

Greetings, VHBT Members and Friends. As we usher in the New Year, I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you and the temple. I will work hard and tirelessly to meet the needs of the membership. I am honored and humbled for this opportunity to serve the temple and members over the next two years.

First I would like to thank Mr. Dale Noriyuki for his leadership and all of the time spent as President for the past two years. He has spent many hours over the past two years. His dedication cannot be measured in time alone. He has accomplished many things over the past two years that have helped the temple grow and thrive. Thank you for all of your hard work, Dale. Of course, without the support of his wife, Gail, and his sons, Darin and Dustin, this would have been very difficult.

I would also thank Reverend John Iwohara for his dedicated work and guidance over the past 9 years. His dedication and hours at the temple, serving our membership and community at-large, is appreciated. I would like to also thank his wife, Edi, and children, Shawn and Jean, for their support.

During this time of year, as I reflect on the past year, I am reminded of all of the things to be thankful for. I am thankful that my family is healthy, than I am surrounded by supportive, dedicated, and hard working members, Board of Directors, and affiliate groups. You are all AMAZING and wonderful people. I cannot wait to get the Year of the Dragon 2012 started.

We started the year off with the New Years Service on January 1, 2012, and installation of the new cabinet on January 6th, 2012.

If you have a computer and want to know of the events happening at the temple, you can access the new temple website at VHBT.ORG. As I went online tonight, I noted so much information there, that I plan to take longer time viewing that information. It is about the temple, its history, to current events. The temple busy and buzzing with events. Remember, Dharma School Service is held on Sunday mornings starting at 9:30 am. There are some Sundays we have special services that begin at 10:00 am.

On January 22, we will be having a joint Ho-Onko Service with Gardena Buddhist Temple starting at 9:30 am. We will be car pooling to Gardena. If you need a ride, please call the temple, or myself.

On January 29th, Sunday, we will be having our Annual Shinen-Kai. It will be at the Venice Japanese Community Center. See you all there. SAVE THE DATE. See the website for updated information.

In closing, I want to again thank you for your support and for giving me this opportunity to serve VHBT. Looking forward to a GREAT YEAR.

In Gassho,
Tom Yamaguchi

Mochitsuki

Dear Venice Hongwanji Buddhist Temple,

Here’s to a very successful Mochitsuki event.

When our temple can bring friends and families together, we are spreading the Nembutsu in practice.

Everyone, young and old worked extremely hard. From rice washing, setup, boiling, grinding, pounding, cutting, shaping, brushing, packaging, distributing and tear down: all were done with extreme effort and care. All parts had to be working to produce great product. Especially those that put breakfast and lunch together. They, kept us fueled with energy. Burnt hands and fingers, strained backs, tired arms, wet, dusty…..everyone contributes.

True it is that Mochitsuki remains one of our largest fundraisers, but the event, IS the result! Our best times as a family are spent face to face, working together. As we work together, we exemplify the spirit of namo amida butsu, and those that come and spend time with us are the beneficiaries of the teachings we’ve learned.

Ok, we have to make money, I get that. But let’s not forget the opportunity these events provide for us to host the community into our home (the Temple), and to remind those that don’t come often, why it’s still important.

Thank you everyone for such a tremendous effort!

For those of you that could not get there, come to the Temple and buy more as we have much available for purchase. I am told that the mochi product is of excellent flavor this year.

Dale Noriyuki

Eitaikyo Service

The Venice Hongwanji Buddhist Temple will be observing its annual Eitaikyo Perpetual Memorial Service on Sunday, November 13, 2011, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

The Eitaikyo Perpetual Memorial Service is observed by the temple to celebrate the lives of all of our family members and friends who have gone to the Pure Land of Amida. It is a chance to show our gratitude to all those from our past who have shared with us the teachings of the Nembutsu. It is also a time when we rededicate ourselves to passing down the teachings of the Nembutsu to future generations, as the past generations have done for us.

Reverend John Iwohara will present the English and Japanese message.

We hope that you and your family will make every effort to attend this most important service. Otoki lunch will be served after the service by Bukkyokai.

Sincerely in Gassho,

Venice Hongwanji Buddhist Temple
