Introduction to Pure Land Buddhism

| August 5, 2019

The VHBT Buddhist Education Committee is presenting the third set of classes in our Introduction to Buddhism series (the first two were Introduction to General Buddhism and Introduction to Mahayana Buddhism). Classes will be taught by Minister Assistant, Richard Modiano.

Wisteria Crest

Description: Developed out of the Mahayana tradition, Pure Land Buddhism does not promise liberation into Nirvana in one lifetime after strenuous practice, but rather rebirth into an interim Pure Land from which Nirvana is but a short step away. Pure Land Buddhism focuses on the veneration of Amitābha Buddha. Through devotion to Amitābha, followers hope to be reborn in his pure land, a final stopping point with enlightenment itself the next step.

Schedule: Four consecutive Wednesdays from 7:30PM – 8:30PM.

  • September 11: Origins of Pure Land Buddhism
  • September 18: Practices of Pure Land Buddhism
  • September 25: Principle Pure Land Sutras
  • October 2: Jodo Shu and Jodo Shinshu

Location: Venice Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, 12371 Braddock Dr, Culver City, CA 90230.

Cost: Free (suggested donation of $5 per class is appreciated).

Suggested text: The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Understanding Buddhism by Gary Gach. Note: the text is not necessary for taking or understanding the course, but will provide a broader overview of Buddhism.
